Building a 17-foot western redcedar and fiberglass composite sea kayak.
Finished.I built a 17-foot composite kayak. This is what it started as. There is plywood and a straight 2x4 for the strongback, and a good supply of western redcedar.Here the strongback has been constructed and the strips milled.The deck has been stripped but not glassed yet.A layer of epoxy before the fiberglassThere is a retractable skeg to help with weathercockingThe hardware is made of the same carbon fiber used on the coaming and seatHere we can see the coaming and seat assembly, as well as the sun (behind the seat), moon (right in front of the coaming) and star (intersection of two poplar curves) inlaysThe moon is curly maple and black walnutThe sun is farmed lacewood and curly mapleThe star (compass rose?) is curly maple and black walnutYou can see the front hatch in this photo
